Acting Police Commissioner Juanita Matanga is urging people in Honiara to remain calm and allow the Police to continue in its operations.

In a statement today, Commissioner Matanga said the Police will remain on high alert and will continue to conduct their operation high visibility in hot spot areas in Honiara.

The areas include Henderson area, Lunga area, Panatina, Kukum labour line, Ranadi, China Town and Point Cruz commercial areas.

SIBC News understands the operation will run into the week to monitor disturbances and false rumours, which have caused public panic and confusion in Honiara.

Meanwhile, police have also arrested 21 young men for last week’s riots and arson.

Another police statement today said 15 of those arrested have been charged with arson, and the rest are charged with unlawful assembly and alcohol-related felonies.

Three of the men who were arrested are juveniles; five were teenagers and the rest were adults.

They appeared before the Magistrate Court yesterday and were remanded in police custody.
