The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) is pooling resources with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the Kukum Highway Upgrade Project.

Described as exciting and valuable, this project will improve roads and bridges along the Kukum Highway – between Honiara City Council Roundabout and Vura Road intersection.

A statement from the Ministry explains, this section of road has lasted a long time and has taken high traffic volumes and many heavy vehicles every day for many years.

It adds the current road condition is technically referred to as “structurally failed”.

MID further explains, once roads are ‘structurally failed’ they have many cracks, deformations and other flaws and are no longer waterproof.

It says if we want to be able to rely on the road pavement, especially through prolonged periods of wet weather, such failed roads must undergo “full road reconstruction”.

It is confident that the JICA Kukum Highway Upgrade Project will deliver a new high quality fully reconstructed arterial road for the full length of the section of highway concerned.
