A Billy Rilangi from the Lau Baelelea constituency says he is concerned intending candidates for this year’s elections are holding political campaigns early and illegally.

Mr Rilangi says intending candidates, some who are working in the National and Provincial Government, have been conducting what they call “awareness meetings” but are clearly campaigns to win people over to vote for them.

Rilangi says they have dished out money to people after these meetings.

Meanwhile, the Chief Electoral officer Polycarp Haununu says a person may lodge a petition after the elections if he or she suspects a candidate has won illegally.

Mr Haununu says the Electoral Act does not specify the date for campaigns to begin but warns all campaigns must be clean.
