The National Parliament and the British High Commission today hosted a half-day event to celebrate the Commonwealth Day which falls today.

Director of Parliamentary Civic Education Unit, Patterson Lusi says his department has never hosted such a program previously.

“We actually use students mostly because we want to keep it small as it’s the first time ever and so what we do is select students from schools around Honiara who took part in three different programs today.”

He also explains this year’s theme.

“For this year’s Commonwealth Day celebration, the theme is based on what is called inclusive commonwealth and so the children who will give speehces and read poems will basically focus on an Inclusive Commonwealth.”

The Commonwealth of Nations is a worldwide political organization of independent nations with their dependencies, all of which recognize the British monarch as their head.

The Commonwealth currently has 53 member states.
