Solomon Islanders need to take weather warnings seriously says the Permanent Secretary for Climate Change and Disaster Management, Dr Melchior Mataki.

Dr Mataki told PACNEWS, appropriate measures must be taken to reduce risks.

He says if warnings are received, people need to move to areas that are safe. They need to prepare, tie down loose roofing irons. These are small steps at the individual level.

Dr. Mataki adds, there has to be a chain of accountability from the government to the people and back to government.

He says disaster risk reduction and management is everyone’s responsibility.

PACNEWS reports the government is pleased, Solomon Islanders are beginning to respond to cyclone warnings chandelled through the media.

SIBC News is aware, the Democratic Coalition for Change government has also taken political leadership to ensure the costs of disasters are reduced and build a safe and secure environment for Solomon Islanders.
