Acting Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare says the Government is now embarking on an active approach to develop the country’s national security strategy.

Speaking during the opening of the South Pacific Intelligence held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara recently, Mr Sogavare said the strategy should also define the responsibilities all Pacific island countries must take in terms of regional security.

He said they are also embarking on developing a National Border Strategy for the maritime borders and it should be completed soon.

He explained, the strategy will be mindful of the shared borders with Solomon Islands’ neighbouring pacific island countries.

The acting Prime Minister said a nationwide consultation was hosted with stakeholders on important matters, to ensure there is a comprehensive government approach; also taking into consideration the importance of community participation.

Mr Sogavare said the dialogue held in Honiara last week, will be a boost to this concept as it will go a long way in helping to improve the content and focus of the strategy.

The acting Prime Minister told participants at the South Pacific Intelligence dialogue, that regional security rests on how Pacific islands define themselves as nations.

He said they have been faced with many challenges but they can overcome them if they work together as partners.

Mr Sogaravare said so long as they stay true to these values, he has no doubt the pacific region will be a paradise to live in.
