The Solomon Islands National Council of Women has strongly condemned the court decision to sentence a father who had sexually abused his 10-year-old daughter to remain behind bars for just over a term of two years.

Last week the Honiara Magistrate Court sentenced a father to two and a half years in jail for sexually abusing his 10-year-old daughter.

But President of the Solomon Islands Council of Women Ella Kauhue says the sentencing is a mockery to the legal system and a slap on the face of the many women victims of sexual violence in the country.

She says sentencing a father who sexually abuses his daughter for only two years is very shallow and meaningless, saying the seriousness of such a case relates to the fact that the girl is his daughter, who is only 10 years old and this will have a negative impact on her life.

Ms. Kauhue adds as a country where sexual violence against women and girls is one of the highest in the world, perpetrators will need to be given long and harsh punishment, saying as a person with no legal background such a case is very serious and that should be reflected in the sentencing.
