The National Government is committed to tackling tobacco use in the country, says Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry Dr. Tenneth Dalipanda.

PS Dalipanda says the government will move a step further and legislate an ‘Act’ to advance the government’s plain packaging agenda.

“The Ministry of Health will now take the lead in taking strong steps to progress the urgent agenda of plain packaging. Along with our support to global theme of getting ready for plain packaging we also have a local theme, Stope second hand smoking.”

Dr. Dalipanda further explains ‘plain packaging’.

“Plain packaging is an important demand reduction measure that reduces the attractiveness of tobacco products, restrict the use of tobacco packaging as a form of tobacco advertising and promotion, limits misleading packaging and labeling and increases the effectiveness of health warning.”
