Construction of a new and bigger morgue for the National Referral Hospital (NRH) is expected to commence this year under a $5 million allocation from the Government’s Development Budget.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Kaitu’u Tautai Angikimua announced in Parliament.

Minister Angikimua explains, the project tender was closed last Friday.

He adds ‘construction drawings’ for the new morgue has been prepared and a site has been identified near the existing morgue.

“The morgue construction drawing has been prepared for a new mortuary building and a site has been identified just next to where it is now. This will allow the existing mortury to contiue providing services while the new one is constructed. The Ministry of Infrastructure was originally tasked to manage the tendering in 2015 and $5 million was made available in the dvelopment budget for that purpose.”

He says Kraemer Ausenco Company Limited did the master planning contract for the NRH and also the architectural drawings and bill of quantities for the morgue.

The new morgue will have space for ten bodies.
